Magic Lanterns Presents: Anti-Fascist Cinemas: A Global Perspective

In 2017, Magic Lantern is proud to present "Anti-Fascist Cinemas: A Global Perspective." The first screening in this ongoing series will reexamine the case of Germany through the lens of a militant post-war avant-garde. The program consists of a short film by Alexander Kluge and Peter Schamoni called "Brutality in Stone" and the feature-length omnibus film "Germany in Autumn."

Following the kidnapping and murder of Hans-Martin Schleyer by members of the RAF, a group of left-wing German filmmakers banded together in the fall of 1977 to articulate a collective response to the national situation. They refused to identify individual contributions, despite the fame of many participants, instead presenting the film as the work of a non-hierarchical community. The result is an extraordinary exercise in artistic collaboration and critical filmmaking, capturing the lively spectrum of political positions within Germany's New Left. In tones ranging from didactic to irreverent, the makers of "Germany in Autumn" strongly criticized the postwar liberal order as a continuation of historical fascism and infused the anti-authoritarian energy of the student movement into their vision of anti-capitalist struggle.
